A government taskforce has been set up to reopen Hammersmith Bridge

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps says he’s calling in “specialist engineers to deliver rapid solutions”.

He criticised a “lack of leadership in London”.

It’s believed it could cost £46m to reopen it to just cyclists and pedestrians, and £141m altogether.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council are welcoming the announcement.

However, they say only the government has the money to fix the bridge, and “ministers must urgently commit to funding the necessary repairs”.
