Over 17,000 people in Croydon have signed a petition for a referendum on a directly elected mayor.

It was handed in to the Labour-run council yesterday.

Croydon South Tory MP Chris Philp says “we’re sick of a small unaccountable clique” and “the public should choose who runs Croydon”.

Directly elected mayors were made possible in 2000, and currently Hackney, Lewisham and Tower Hamlets have them.
