Unions are calling for a temporary ban on school absence fines as tens of thousands of pupils return to classrooms in England and Wales

The National Association of Head Teachers says parents shouldn't be penalised for not sending their kids back due to fears about coronavirus.

Local authorities can issue fines of 120 pounds if children are absent without reason.

However, a survey from the National Foundation for Educational Research also shows more than two in five children will need "intensive" support to catch up.

The study coincides with Labour yesterday calling for A-level and GCSE exams to be delayed next year.

Headteacher Siobhan Lowe from Tolworth Girl’s School supports a complete rethink.
