The authority has switched to a new supplier but says the decision will have big financial implications.
Merton has instead agreed to award a one-year contract to Corona Energy for gas supplies to its public buildings from next month.
These include council offices, libraries, leisure centres and some schools.
Merton is now asking ministers for financial support to help it make up the lost revenue.
