Crews were called on Friday evening to Tavistock Road, after a neighbour saw flames and smoke coming out the window.
The man was taken to hospital, and part of a four-roomed flat was damaged by the blaze.
A spokesperson for the brigade says that ashtrays should be emptied carefully, and they should be wetted before throwing them into a bin.
