Today marks the anniversary of the first time the speaking clock was introduced in the UK, 85 years ago.

It provides precise time synchronised from an atomic clock in real time and is still alive and well.

The current UK time source comes from the National Physical Laboratory in Bushy Park in Teddington.

The first voice was recorded by telephonist Ethel Jane Cain who won a prize equivalent to £720 in a find the “Golden Voice” competition.
