A fire at a flat in South Croydon is believed to have been caused by lithium-ion batteries.

Part of a five-roomed property on the first floor of a block in Purley Oaks Road was damaged in the early hours of yesterday.

One man was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Fire inspectors say batteries can present a fire risk if they’re over-charged, short circuited, submerged in water or damaged.
