Levels of air pollution have dropped in Richmond by as much as 21% in the 18 months since a 20mph speed limit was introduced

An assessment was carried out at three locations before and after the scheme was introduced to measure nitrogen dioxide levels.

The council says the evidence provides encouraging early signs that lower speed limits may contribute to lower pollution levels.

But it also says the impact of COVID, where people used their cars less, may also be a factor.
