As Heathrow celebrates its 75th anniversary this year we learn that the airport was named something else when it first opened in 1946.

It was a private airfield back in 1929 and was first known as the Great West Aerodrome.

Then it was demolished in 1944 and then reopened offering commercial flights and was called London Airport.

It became known as London Heathrow in 1966 to avoid confusion with other airports in the capital such as Gatwick
