It’s emerged work on Hampton Court bridge over-ran because corrosion damage was discovered

The structure was part closed in January for an expected period of four months, but the additional work increased this to five months.

The work being carried out involved creating bollards to separate pedestrians and vehicles.

Surrey County Council says the corrosion was detected and treated before it got any worse.

The authority says this resulted in money being saved in the long term and traffic disruption being minimised.
