Ultraviolet lights are to be fitted to escalators on the underground, to constantly clean the handrails.

A trial at Heathrow found they improve cleanliness by 50%.

They’ll be powered by a small dynamo which generates power from the moving handrail.

The units will be fitted to 110 escalators on the network.
