A Black couple who escaped slavery in America and fled to Britain have been honoured with a blue plaque.

Ellen and William campaigned for abolition when they arrived in 1848, and set up the London Emancipation Society.

The plaque has now been placed outside their two-storey brick row house in Hammersmith.

Their great-great granddaughter, Julia-Ellen, says they had no choice but to flee.
