Surrey Fire and Rescue is denying claims an elderly man’s death in a fire in East Horsley last week is down to the cuts being made

The Fire Brigades Union claims the first fire engine to the scene took 13 minutes to arrive.

The union says this was because nearby Painshill station was moved to daytime only cover at the start of the year.

The FBU says “fires tend to double in size every minute and our officials estimate the delay here was four minutes long.”

The changes to fire and rescue cover at Painshill were delivered as part of a new fire and rescue plan voted through in Surrey in 2019.

The plan included removing seven fire engines, removing night-time cover at three fire stations, and axing 70 firefighter jobs.

A spokesperson from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said:

“The claim that if Painshill Fire Station was open at night the elderly gentleman would have survived is not true and is not based on any evidence.

This is a live and complex investigation, so we are unable to comment any further at this stage.

Our thoughts are with the gentleman’s family at this very sad time."

The previous leader of Kingston Council is going to stay in charge of the borough’s council properties

Caroline Kerr has been appointed as Portfolio Holder for Assets, despite having stepped down from the leadership.

At the last reshuffle in May, the responsibility for assets was that of the Leader, who is now Andreas Kirsch.

Kingston Council says the amount of extra money paid to councillors has remained the same though.

It also says that there is no requirement for the full council to approve the establishment of a role or the appointment to it.

Kingston Council's Full Statement:

There is no requirement for Council to approve the establishment of a Portfolio Holder role or the appointment to it.

These are matters entirely at the discretion of the Leader of the Council provided the number of Portfolio Holders does not exceed 10.

Customarily such appointments are reported to the next meeting of Council for information and this will happen at the meeting on 14th December.

In this case there is no overall increase in the Special Responsibility Allowances payable because Cllr Kirsch has retained one of the portfolio roles himself but will receive only the Leaders SRA (Members are not entitled to more than one full SRA regardless of the number of eligible roles they occupy).

While the total number of Portfolio Holders has increased to 9 the number receiving SRAs for the role therefore remains at 8.

Where there are joint holders of any SRA eligible role, including Portfolio Holder positions, the allowance is halved.

In these circumstances the Member(s) concerned may receive two allowances so long as the total amount payable does not exceed the amount that would have been payable had either role been occupied singly.

On this basis Cllr Thompson shares both the Portfolio position and the Co-Chair role of the Health & Wellbeing Board and is thus entitled to 50% of both allowances.

Cllr Foulder-Hughes is entitled to the remaining 50% of the shared Portfolio Holder position.

The concern from leading councillors is that the charge may dissuade some from visiting.

A poll carried out by Action for Children has revealed that many of London’s working parents are worried about Christmas.

Two thirds said they were unwilling to take time off over the festive period and would take on extra work to cover the costs.

Among the chief concerns were the ability to afford presents, soaring energy bills and the price of food.

The charity revealed the results as they launched their annual Secret Santa campaign helping the capitals’ most vulnerable children.

An Insulate Britain protester has been moved out of Bronzefield Women’s Prison in Ashford, to hospital.

Emma Smart has been on hunger strike for 13 days.

The 44 year old was jailed for four months for breaching an injunction relating to the protests.

She’s vowed to stop eating until the Government moves to insulate homes.

Speaking from HMP Bronzefield Emma told Insulate Britain:

“The window of my cell in the hospital wing is blocked up and there is little natural light, in my previous cell I could see the birds and trees that line the prison fence. I have less time to go outside in the prison yard for exercise now. All of this is testing my resolve to continue, but I feel that not eating is the only thing I can do from prison to draw attention to those who will have to make the choice between heating and eating this winter.

“Not standing by while our government commits treason against the people of this country feels like the most important thing I will do in my life.”

The Daily Mail writes that it’s now on the market for £18m, which after £1m of renovations, would leave them £2m better off.

A source told the newspaper that the star was after somewhere more “leafy” but “things just didn’t work out”.
