Harlequins secured bonus-point win over Bath Rugby at the Twickenham Stoop

Supporters of rugby union were treated to another exciting game at the Twickenham Stoop.

Esterhuizen opened the try-tally for the hosts Harlequins within the opening three minutes; Smith adding the extra points.

Visitors Bath Rugby replied promptly with a 3-point penalty, but the hosts extended their lead with Esterhuizen scoring his second in the 15th minute of the game.

Despite this positive intent, momentum shifted in the 24th minute as an awkward tackle on speeding Bath fullback de Glanville saw Quins' Marler shown yellow. This resulted in another frustrating first half for the quartered men; Underhill powered over the try-line for the men in white; converted.

Things worsened for the hosts after they lost possession following a scrum and Bath took full advantage of a high defensive line from Quins, perfectly placing a kick behind them, with the ball rolling into touch just 5 metres from the hosts' try-line.  Bath pushed onward and were playing advantage as Quins were penalised for not rolling away after tackling; Stuart darting over the whitewash.   The extra two points were added and this gave the visitors a five-point lead going into half-time.

Half-time at The Twickenham Stoop: Harlequins 12 - 17 Bath Rugby

With a 5-point deficit, Quins were looking to start strong in the second half.  Bath Rugby kicked off; the ball caught by Quins who box-kicked into the visiting half.  Bath knocked on under tackle handing the hosts a scrum.  They passed the ball from wing to wing before a penalty was awarded to the visitors and  Cipriani sent the ball up the touch-line, landing just outside the 22.

Scrum to Quins, followed by a penalty, allowing the hosts to clear their lines.

Harlequins secured line-out ball but the Bath defense was strong.  The ball was moved from wing to wing but with little territory being gained.

Marchant then gathered from the ruck and made a break through the Bath defensive line before play was halted for a Head Injury Assessment for the visiting scrum-half.

Danny Care opted for a scrum inside the visiting 22.  Quins played the ball quickly; Care passing to Smith who had to stretch to gather the ball.  The fly-half secured it and arched around the opposition, found a gap and over the try-line.  Smith converted his own try and the hosts retook the lead.

Opportunities came and went for both sides; Quins gave away a penalty after getting up to the visiting 5-metre line; Bath breaking through the defense and running the length of the pitch only to be stopped by a desperate try-saving tackle from Green.

The hosts came close to another try as Marchant broke through the Bath defence before offloading to Esterhuizen then onto Smith.  Care then chipped over to the wing for Lynagh but the ball could not be gathered cleanly and was instead knocked on into the dead-zone.  In another attack, Care broke through and chipped over the last man but could not out-step the defence - fans felt he was taken out but play continued and Bath cleared their lines.

Harlequins often make decisions that worry their supporters, and this game was no different.  The hosts earned free-kicks and penalties; each time opting for a scrum despite the kickable points on offer.  The fans needed not have worries as this tactic paid off:  Dombrandt sent the ball to Marchant who leapt for the line, touching down by the corner-flag.

Smith lined up the posts and added the extra 2 points extending their lead to 9 points: 26-17 with just over 5 minutes remaining.

As a rendition of 'The Mighty Quinn' resonated around The Twickenham Stoop, the hosts were awarded a penalty within their own half.  A long kick by Smith took play up to the Bath 22.

The hosts opted for a cheeky short line-out.  Quins started to show off their ball-handling skills as Smith passed to Green, who returned the ball.  Smith danced his way through the defence and passed to Marchant on the wing who crossed for his second try of the game and Quins' 5th.

People in Hounslow are seeing “severe disruptions” to waste and recycling collections.

The council has issued an apology and says the issue is down to “unforeseen circumstances.”

Anyone who has had a collection missed,  is being encouraged to report it online so it can be re-booked.

Cllr Guy Lambert, Cabinet Member for Highways, Recycling and Companies said:

"We are currently experiencing disruption in waste and recycling collections across the borough. The pandemic and shortages of qualified HGV drivers have caused exacerbating strain on our excellent Recycle 360 workforce.

This extraordinary pressure resulted in a short interruption to our full waste and recycling service yesterday which is now resolved. The Council and Recycle 360 are working together to effectively respond to the ever increasing demand in the service.

"Despite these challenges we will work hard to continue to provide a regularly uninterrupted service just like we did throughout the pandemic.

"Recycle 360 crews have already commenced work to catch up with every missed collection across the borough. The delay yesterday will regrettably cause some delays for other residents as we work through the backlog. Crews will continue to make collections throughout the week including the weekend.

"Residents are advised to present their bin and recycling boxes for collection on the normal day of collection and leave it out until it has been collected.

"We recognise that delays are frustrating and we're sorry for disruption where it has occurred.

"If your collection has been missed please report it using our online form via our website."

The Met is changing how lone officers in plain clothes will verify their identity and purpose to lone women in the wake of Sarah Everard's kidnap in Clapham and subsequent murder.

The majority of police officers patrol in uniform and in close proximity to other colleagues, but there are limited occasions where a lone plain clothed officer may need to engage with the public.

From today, lone plain clothed officers, including those reacting to incidents whilst off-duty, will proactively provide verification of their identity and purpose to any lone woman they need to engage with using a video call to a uniformed supervisor in one of our police operations rooms. This is in addition to showing their warrant card.

The uniformed supervisor in the control room will conduct the necessary checks and provide reassurance that the officer is who they say they are and that they are acting appropriately. They will also ensure the encounter is properly recorded.

The video call will be made using the officer’s mobile device, but on the rare occasion they don’t have their device, such as when they are off duty, the officer will provide the woman with the telephone number to visually call the operations room directly. All local operations rooms have been equipped with a dedicated mobile device to make and receive these calls that utilise a range of popular video calling services including FaceTime, WhatsApp, Skype, Zoom and Google Duo.

They can also call 999 directly, to ask for verification of an officer’s identification and reassurance from the police control room if they prefer this route, or if video calling is not available for any reason.

The Met has consulted widely with key partners working to tackle violence against women and girls on this process in order to ensure it provides the reassurance that is needed.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, Frontline Policing, said: “It is very unusual for a lone plain-clothed officer to engage with a lone woman. It is simply not how we usually operate but there are some rare circumstances where this could happen and we want to give all the reassurance we can.

“We know we need to regain women’s trust and we fully accept that the onus is on us to verify we are who we say we are and that we are acting appropriately - that’s why we’ve introduced this system.

“We hope that being able to see and speak to a uniformed colleague in what will very visibly be a police operations room, and know that there is a proper police record of the encounter, will provide the reassurance that we understand is necessary.”

Kingston Council’s Lib Dem leader is resigning after just 18 months in the role.

Caroline Kerr has confirmed the news in the last couple of hours.

She took over the role from Liz Green at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in spring last year.

Councillor Caroline Kerr, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Canbury, said, "It is with a heavy heart that I am resigning as Leader of Kingston Council. It has been a huge honour to lead the Royal Borough and this is not a decision I have taken lightly. I will stay in post until my successor has been selected.

"I am extremely proud of the work of the Liberal Democrat Council in serving the people of Kingston, particularly in these most challenging times. Together we have supported Kingston’s residents and our local NHS through the pandemic, we are building the first council homes in a generation and we are investing in two new leisure centres which will serve everyone in the borough for the next 50 years. All whilst we have turned around the council finances after the Conservatives had left Kingston on the edge of bankruptcy under their watch.

"I became Leader as Covid 19 struck. I was able to draw on my professional experience of helping organisations deal with crisis to support the council through the pandemic. Although Covid is still a threat, the worst of the emergency appears to be over and I feel it is now time for new leadership to take the borough and the Liberal Democrat group on the next phase of its journey.

"These last 18 months have been a time of unprecedented challenge. It has taken a toll on us all. Like many, I have spent some time taking stock, reflecting on my commitments to the Council, my family and to the residents of Canbury. After much consideration and having led the Council through this challenging period, I have decided that I must stand down as Leader.

"I’d like to thank staff at Kingston Council, our partner organisations and elected members for their support and commitment to serving local residents. I will stay on as leader until a new leader is chosen. I will continue to represent the residents of Canbury to the best of my ability and to campaign against cuts to peak train services at Kingston station."

Cllr Margaret Thompson, Mayor of Kingston from May 2019-April 2021, said, "I would like to thank Cllr Kerr for her excellent and diligent leadership for the past nineteen months. Cllr Kerr has led the Liberal Democrat group during the most challenging period the Council has ever had to face, using her skills of crisis management and forward thinking to ensure that the residents of Kingston were as well supported as possible during the pandemic. We look forward to moving on with a new leader to take us into the future and wish Cllr Kerr all the best after this difficult period."
